What Causes Upper Back Pain

Many Americans suffer from some sort of lower back pain or another on a regular basis. It is uncommon to hear of upper or middle back pain, but much more common for the lower back to cause excruciating pain that can run up the back and down the legs. Although there are regular symptoms that go with upper back pain, there are still plenty of arguments concerning what exactly causes it.

The back is an extremely complicated mechanism and there may be many underlying reasons for upper or lower back pain. Often times your physician may see no abnormalities concerning your anatomy and may consider the pain to be some sort of psychological problem. Upper back pain is usually in between the shoulder blades, while the actual anatomical reason is often situated somewhere else in the back or shoulders. Trigger points are usually found located close to muscles covering the bones and can even be located far from the actual problem. This is called referred pain, and is a common aspect to upper and middle back pain. Often, upper back pain is a posture problem, and balance as well as exercise can help reduce the problems. With poor posture, not only can the upper back and shoulders be in pain, but it can also misaligned the rest of the body causing pain in other areas. You'll often see improper posture from herniated or degenerated disks, where proper posture seems to cause more pain. With proper posture, not only can you strengthen the back, but also help with disk problems. Bulging discs, misaligned discs, herniated discs and other disk problems occur four times more often in women than in men. Many office workers, computer personnel and those who carry heavy backpacks on a regular basis can be susceptible to upper back pain. Poor posture, disc degeneration, as well as hip problems cause misalignment to other parts of the body resulting in upper back pain. It's important if you feel that you have upper back pain that you get diagnosed properly. Many physicians will misdiagnose upper pain in the back, but with careful attention to detail the problem can be discovered and proper corrective procedures and exercises can result. While many Americans suffer from lower back pain, just as many can suffer from upper back pain, and due to missed diagnoses learn to live with the pain and find that degenerative back problems can result. It's important should you find that you are one of the millions of Americans with upper back pain that you get diagnosed properly as soon as possible. There are many ways to alleviate pain in the upper back as well as a lower back, and whether medication, holistic approaches, chiropractors, acupuncture, upper back pain can be alleviated.
