Different Treatments for Back Pain

While millions of Americans suffer from lower and upper back pain, there are many options to relieving the pain caused by over exertion or degenerative bone problems. Your first step would be to hit your physician to find out exactly what is wrong with your back and discuss your treatment plan before starting any medication, exercise, or even chiropractic plan.

While abnormalities in the back will often show a physician where exactly things have gone wrong, other situations require more in-depth tests and scans. If you have recently injured your back and have excruciating to moderate pain, it's time to take a few steps to alleviate pain and begin recuperation.

In the first couple a days after back problems arise, rest is advised. More than a 24 to 48 hour period of rest can be more damaging as muscle strength begins to deteriorate. You may try an anti-inflammatory medication or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication to help alleviate inflammation and soreness. Just remember when you take pain medication, that you can overstrain you're already injured back and muscles so be sure you're aware of your medication results.

You may also try an application of heat; often heat helps the ease muscle spasms, as well as relaxes the muscles to lower the pain. You may try hot water bottles, hot baths, heating pads, or a warm blanket.

After your initial rest period, exercise becomes vital to keep the back strong and increase flexibility. Proper exercising and relaxation as well as slow stretching of the muscles becomes vital as with too much rest degeneration of muscle tissue begins. Exercises can continue after muscle pain relief to strengthen the back and avoid recurrence.

Your doctor may also prescribe heavier medication including muscle relaxers in order to relax the muscles and allow the back and spine to return to its normal position. Strained muscles and inflamed muscles, can actually swell to the point where they keep your spine out of alignment, muscle relaxers can help your spine return.

You also may be prescribed physical therapy with a professional. There are certain exercises that a physical therapist will be aware of to help realign your back, strengthen muscles and alleviate back pain. Your therapist may also prescribe aqua therapy, ultrasound, and even yoga and meditation.

You may find that if you have strained or over exerted your back to the point where it is actually injured, that a combination of these treatment methods may be applied. It's important should you injure your back and find excruciating pain that you seek medical treatment as soon as possible. The longer your back is out of alignment, the more inflamed your muscles will become increasing recuperation time as well as increasing your back pain.
